Bathroom electrical zones explained

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix, so the Wiring Regulations divide bathrooms into zones with strict rules for each.

The zones

ZoneWhereWhat is allowed
0Inside the bath or shower trayOnly SELV equipment rated at least IPX7
1Above the bath or shower up to 2.25 mFixed equipment suitable for the zone, at least IPX4, such as an electric shower
20.6 m beyond zone 1Equipment rated at least IPX4, shaver sockets to BS EN 61558-2-5

Socket outlets

Standard sockets must be at least 3 m horizontally from the edge of zone 1. A socket inside a zone is one of the most common bathroom findings on an EICR, often coded C2, or C1 if parts are exposed.

RCD protection

All circuits in a room containing a bath or shower need 30 mA RCD protection. See RCD protection explained.
