What an SPD does
A surge protective device limits short spikes in voltage, from lightning strikes on the network or switching on the supply, that can damage electronics such as boilers, TVs and computers.
Does no SPD fail an EICR?
Generally no. The absence of surge protection in an existing installation is usually recorded as a C3, improvement recommended. The report remains satisfactory if that is the only finding.
When to fit one
- When the consumer unit is replaced, as it will usually be required then anyway
- If the property has expensive electronics or smart heating controls
- In areas with overhead supply lines, which are more exposed to lightning-induced surges
See consumer unit replacement cost, which includes surge protection where required.
