What happens during an EICR

How to prepare, how long the inspection takes, when the power goes off and what you receive afterwards.

Before the visit

  • Tell your tenants the date and that the power will be off for short periods.
  • Make sure the consumer unit, meter and every room can be reached.
  • Have any previous EICR to hand. It helps the inspector compare results.

On the day

The inspector starts with a visual check of the consumer unit, accessories and visible cabling. They then remove a sample of socket and switch fronts, isolate each circuit in turn for dead testing (continuity and insulation resistance), and finish with live tests of earth loop impedance and RCD operation. A one to three bedroom home usually takes two to four hours.

Afterwards

You receive the report as a PDF by email. It includes the overall assessment, any coded observations with photographs, the schedule of test results for every circuit, and the recommended date for the next inspection.

If anything needs fixing, read EICR codes explained or ask us for a remedial quote.
